The Blitzboks beat Australia 29-5 on Saturday to set up a meeting with Argentina in the Dubai Sevens Cup semi-finals.
South Africa were made to fight for every inch in the quarter-final against Australia, whose possession domination forced the Blitzboks to play a more defense-orientated game.
But, in the end, the Blitzboks’ supreme defensive work and clinical execution from the little ball possession they had, were enough to take them past the Australians.
The result has the Blitzboks equalling their 16-game win streak in the World Rugby Sevens series, a, record they set in the 2008-09 season.
Tries by JC Pretorius and captain Siviwe Soyizwapi gave South Africa a 12-point lead. But Australia hit back through Henry Hutchinson on the stroke of half time.
It was much of the same in the second half, as scores by Soyizwapi and Selvyn Davids all but took Australia out of the contest despite their control of possession and territory.
With the result all but wrapped up, there was stil time for a feel-good moment as debutant Tiaan Pretorius ran a brilliant line to take the final pass to score his maiden try for the Blitzboks. The rookie was swamped by his teammates in celebration of his touchdown.
