After parading to victory over Siya Kolisi, Jean de Villiers now faces the next challenger in the series to determine the best Springbok skipper.

De Villiers won 53% of the vote in last week’s captain’s run. Now he faces Gary Teichmann, who was greatly respected by those in the game for his humility and courage.

The Boks won 26 of the 36 matches when Teichmann led the side, lifted the 1998 Tri-Nations trophy after an unbeaten run, and went on to win a record-breaking 17 Tests in succession under his leadership.

The Zimbabwe-born No 8 also skippered SA in the 1997 British & Irish Lions series at home, which the hosts lost 2-1. He even brushed off a cracking punch to the jaw from Ireland great Keith Wood in an ill-tempered clash in 1998.

His 42-Test international career sandwiched the 1995 and 1999 Rugby World Cups without playing in either tournament, and former Bok coach Nick Mallett has admitted his controversial decision to sack Teichmann before the 1999 edition was wrong.

With Teichmann at the helm, Natal won three Currie Cups, and the Durbanites also reached the Super 10 final in 1994. Four years later, he led the Sharks to the decider of the Super 12.

Following his retirement in 2001 after a 10-year professional career, Teichmann also served as Sharks CEO from 2016 to 2019.
