Blue Bulls Rugby Union president Willem Strauss has confirmed they are eager to extend John Mitchell’s contract beyond the 2019 season.
Mitchell took over as Bulls director of rugby in May 2017 as part of the union’s ‘turnaround strategy’ and is also occupying the role of head coach of the Super Rugby and Currie Cup teams.
A report earlier in the year stated that the 54-year-old Mitchell had already signed a contract extension, but Strauss confirmed that no official contract has been signed.
‘We are in the process of doing exactly that and things are still in place for us to do so. We want to retain him. He is high on our wish list,’ Strauss told the Pretoria News.
Strauss added that the union is looking to add more depth to its Super Rugby squad for the 2019 season.
‘We are always looking for quality players at the Bulls. There are some positions where we are low in depth so it means that we must go find players with experience. It would be ideal to have a squad of 40 players if we want to compete in Super Rugby and coming close to that is certainly part of our plan.’
