The Vodacom Bulls relinquished second spot in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship after Munster beat Cardiff on Friday night.
Munster overtook the Bulls after a 42-21 bonus-point victory over Cardiff in Cork guaranteed the Irish team a playoff berth and bolstered their bid for home advantage in the final eight.
The Bulls beat Glasgow Warriors 29-17 on Friday at Loftus Versfeld to climb to second on the URC log, but now occupy third with the remainder of the teams in the top eight still to play.
Jake White’s men have 53 points and trail Munster by three, and could slip further down the standings if the Stormers – in fourth with 52 points – beat table-topping Leinster on Saturday.
The Sharks and Ulster, in fifth and sixth, respectively, and both on 51 points can also leapfrog the Bulls.
The Durbanites host Irish side Connacht in Durban on Saturday while the Ulstermen travel to eighth-placed Edinburgh, and victory for either the Sharks or Ulster would see to it that the Bulls drop no lower than sixth.
Watch: Top-of-the-table clash deserves a full house!
