Munster reportedly have their eyes set on boosting their pack with a major move for a member of the Springboks’ 2019 World Cup-winning pack.

According to a report on RugbyPass, the Irish club has tabled a “sizeable deal” to persuade Springbok hooker Malcolm Marx to leave Japan for Ireland.

However, the Irish province, which climbed into sixth place in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship by beating the Lions on Friday, are not the only suitors for Marx’s signature.

French side Clermont have also reportedly shown an interest in Marx, but did recently add Wallabies rake Folau Fainga’a to their pack, suggesting they could be out of the race.

Niall Scannell, 30, is Munster’s most experienced option at hooker and is backed up by a trio of young Irish players. Munster’s front row came under heavy pressure in the victory over the Lions, so adding a player of Marx’s quality would be a statement of intent.

Marx currently plays for the Kubota Spears, the club he joined after spending the previous season with Japan League One rivals NTT Shining Arcs. The 28-year-old has been in Japan since leaving the Lions in 2019.
