The English press has slated the Springbok coaching staff for an ‘antagonising touchline presence’ during the recently concluded three-Test tour of the United Kingdom.
The Springboks finished the 2021 Test season with a narrow loss to England in London, following wins over Wales in Cardiff and Scotland in Edinburgh.
However, after the Test at Twickenham, videos of Bok team physiotherapist Rene Naylor shouting instructions from the touchline went viral on social media.
The Springbok coaching staff – including recently banned director of rugby Rassie Erasmus – also copped a lot of heat for carrying instructions to the team during stoppages in the three-Test series against the British & Irish Lions earlier this year.

In the Mail Online, Chris Foy criticised the incidents as a ‘scourge’.
“The absence of their water-carrying director of rugby, Rassie Erasmus, didn’t stop the Springboks from maintaining an antagonistic touchline presence at Twickenham,” Foy wrote.
“Team physio Rene Naylor – a vocal nuisance during the Lions series – was almost knocked over by Frans Steyn at one stage, after walking on the field as the visitors were attacking England’s line. Such incursions are a scourge and must stop.”
Also writing in the Daily Mail after the Springboks beat Wales at the Principality stadium, Will Kelleher called Naylor and the Bok coaching staff ‘yappers’.
“Physio Rene Naylor is the worst of the yappers – the one who yelled instructions at the Boks from the in-goal area during the Lions series – and here she was at it again,” Kelleher wrote.
