The Blitzboks scored in the final minute of play to snatch a victory against defending series champions Australia and progress to the cup quarterfinals of the Dubai Sevens on Friday.
After letting an early 12-0 lead slip, the Blitzboks were level at 12-12 with Australia deep into the second half before an excellent play from a lineout set Dalvon Blood free on the left wing for the winning try.
The result saw the Springbok Sevens team complete a fantastic turnaround from their tournament opening loss to Great Britain and top Pool A, giving them a chance to defend their Dubai Sevens title.
South Africa will face Samoa in the fourth quarter-final at 9.34am on Saturday morning.
