The 23-year-old has signed a two-year deal with the Sharks, who have also recruited Powell as their new director of rugby.
Du Plessis first joined the Sharks straight out of school and would represent the union’s youth teams.
However, a combination of injuries and sevens commitments prevented him from making his full senior debut for the Sharks.
The former Junior Springbok has played for the Blitzboks since 2018, most recently helping the team win gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
