The Blitzboks turned in a passive and disjointed performance to start the defence of their Dubai Sevens title with a loss to Great Britain on Friday.
Having gone into the break 14-5 down, the Blitzboks never recovered in a scoreless second half and will now try to defend their tournament title on the back foot.
JC Pretorius scored the only try for South Africa just before half-time, but there was very little aggression or accuracy in anything the Springbok Sevens did in their opening fixture.
The Blitzboks will next face Kenya at 1.20pm on Friday.
