Blitzboks off to flying start

The Blitzboks cruised to a 49-0 win over Japan in their opening game of the London Sevens on Saturday.

The Springbok Sevens came into the tournament with some momentum, having won the previous event in Singapore. They made the perfect start to proceedings as they ran in seven tries in an annihilation of outclassed Japan.

Neil Powell’s charges led 28-0 at half-time, and although they weren’t quite as dominant in the second stanza, there was only ever going to be one winner.

Try scored by Branco du Preez, who also slotted both conversions. Then @JustinGeduld gets his 100th try in the @WorldRugby7s pic.twitter.com/Jg37Y6uA3D

Notes:

  • The Blitzboks won the HSBC London Sevens in 2005 and 2011.
  • Branco du Preez will become the most capped Springbok Sevens player of all time, playing in his 70th tournament. Kyle Brown (69), Frankie Horne and Chris Dry (68) are next on the list.
  • Du Preez is also set to extend his Blitzboks record for career conversions (396), the most by any South African player.
