The Blitzboks continued their perfect start to the Commonwealth Games by whitewashing Scotland in a six-try victory to finish on top of Pool B on Saturday.
Angelo Davids scored his second hat-trick of the tournament to help the Blitzboks win the decisive pool game, with the South Africans having already qualified for the quarter-finals, which begin at 5.30pm on Saturday evening.
A tightly contested first half saw South Africa take a 10-0 lead into the break, thanks to a try each from Selvyn Davids and JC Pretorius. However, they did lose captain Siviwe Soyizwapi to a concussion after the speedster was involved in a heavy collision with teammate Muller du Plessis when trying to gather a kick-off.
Though Mfundo Ndhlovu was stretchered off after a high tackle in Friday’s win over Tonga, he surprisingly made an appearance off the bench in the second half on Saturday and looks set to continue to play through the rest of the tournament.
The second half of the match turned into the Angelo Davids show as he exploited the space in behind Scotland’s defence, latching onto kicks from Ronald Brown and Selvyn Davids to all but seal the contest. There was still time for the winger to grab his third try, before substitute Shaun Williams crossed the tryline to make it 34-0 to South Africa.
Victory meant that South Africa will avoid facing rivals Fiji in the quarter-finals and will instead play Canada (kick-off 9.48pm).
