The Blitzboks were forced to settle for fourth place after being handed a second successive loss at the Cape Town Sevens by the USA in rainy conditions on Sunday night.
Having suffered a semi-final defeat to Samoa earlier in the afternoon, South Africa were beaten 22-14 by the USA as the rain poured down at Cape Town Stadium.
Captain Siviwe Soyizwapi and speedster Dalvon Blood scored a try each for the Blitzboks, but it was not enough as the Americans exploited their defensive weaknesses.
The game was, at least for this season, the last in a Blitzboks jersey for Muller du Plessis and JC Pretorius who will now join the Sharks and Lions respectively.
Later in the evening, in a torrential downpour, Samoa upset New Zealand with a late try to claim the men’s title, but the Kiwis did get some silverware by beating Australia in the women’s final.
The Springboks Sevens team will next be in action in Hamilton from 21-22 January 2023.
