The Blitzboks recovered from a stuttering start to claim a comfortable 54-5 victory over Spain in the Cup quarter-finals of the Vancouver Sevens on Sunday.

The South Africans, who finished top of their pool, will take on Great Britain in the semi-finals on Sunday at 10.42pm (South Africa time). Should the Blitzboks make it through, they will face either Ireland or Kenya in the Cup final at 2.25am on Monday morning.

It was not an ideal start to the match for the Blitzboks as Spain worked their way forward and opened the scoring through Manu Moreno.

However, the young Blitzboks quickly composed themselves and set about dismantling Spain, scoring eight tries including Angelo Davids scoring a hat-trick and substitute Shaun Williams a brace.

Ronald Brown and Dewald Human also enjoyed exceptional outings, grabbing a try and kicking three conversions each, while Brown picked up three try-assists and Human assisted two tries.

The Blitzboks hit straight back from their early setback as Brown stepped his way through the defence to score, after Muller du Plessis took the team into Spain territory with an excellent linebreak.

Dewald Human then put Angelo Davids away on the left wing for the Blitzboks’ second try after Brown won a breakdown turnover. Davids got his second and the Blitzboks’ third try of the match, from a wonderfully weighted pass from Human to put the team 21-5 up at the break.

The Blitzboks continued their momentum in the second half, with Brown breaking out wide before passing on his inside to Human, who was able to grab a try for himself.  Brown picked up his second assist as he put substitute Shaun Williams over from a quick-tap penalty inside Spain’s 22.

Brown’s third assist was a gem as he produced a sensational cross-field kick, gathered by Angelo Davids to score his hat-trick. Williams then grabbed his second, before JC Pretorius sealed the rout with a try after the final hooter.
