The Blitzboks beat Spain 33-12 in their opening match of the Seville Sevens tournament on Saturday.
After their pool match against Samoa was declared a 0-0 draw due to the Pacific Islanders’ withdrawal from the event, South Africa started their quest for a fourth straight Cup title this season on a winning note.
The Blitzboks were under pressure from the outset, but their defensive mettle was on full display as they denied the hosts any points.
Then, against the run of play, South Africa forced a turnover and went on to score when Mfundo Ndhlovu dotted down and Branco du Preez converted to give their team a 7-0 lead.
But Spain hit back immediately from the restart with a converted try to level the scores heading into the half-time break.
It got better for the home side as they went into the lead with a try early in the second half.
As expected though, the Blitzboks still had some fight left in them and they added four more tries, including a brace by the ever-impressive Selvyn Davids, to secure a hard-fought 21-point victory to extend their winning streak to 30 matches.
South Africa will next face USA at 5:25pm in their last pool match before the playoffs.
