The Blitzboks scored two second-half tries to beat Canada 14-0 on Saturday and advance to the semi-finals of the Spain Sevens.
It wasn’t pretty, as the Blitzboks were made to fight for every inch of this victory over the Canucks who played a near-perfect game, but it’s job done and on to Sunday’s semi-finals for Neil Powell’s men.
In an intense encounter, South Africa failed to break down Canada’s defence and were left frustrated as they went into the break deadlocked at 0-0.
It was much of the same in the second half, as the Blitzboks spurned a couple of opportunities.
South Africa’s big break finally came in the 11th minute when Ryan Oosthuizen stubbornly barged through a couple of attempted tackles to score. And, as luck would have it, the conversion from Branco du Preez bounced over after hitting the crossbar.
They then put the outcome beyond doubt when Justin Geduld scuttled over to double their lead in the final minute.
The result means South Africa equal Fiji’s record of 27 straight wins, the second most behind New Zealand.
