After fending off a trio of contenders, can Schalk Burger retain the throne for having delivered the biggest hit when he is confronted by England’s Courtney Lawes?

Burger has fended off all of Bismarck du Plessis, Brian Lima and Bakkies Botha to remain king of the tackle. Last week, Burger claimed a narrow victory over Du Plessis’ famous hit on All Blacks flyhalf Dan Carter.

Now, he faces a challenge from England’s vice-captain.

England hosted France in the fifth and final round of the 2015 Six Nations and needed to win the game by 26 points or more to claim the title. However, the home side found themselves 15-7 down in the first half. In the 25th minute, France looked to launch an attack from inside their own half. The ball went out of a breakdown to flyhalf Jules Plisson, who took his time in releasing it to centre Gael Fickou. That gave Lawes more than enough time to land a massive hit on the No 10, rocking him backwards and sending him flying to the ground. England won the match 55-35 but missed out on the required points difference to win the Six Nations.

Western Province hosted the Blue Bulls in the 2009 Currie Cup semi-final and Schalk Burger obliterated Springbok teammate Fourie du Preez with a hit that brought the Newlands faithful to their feet.
