Reports from the UK suggest that flyhalf Dan Biggar will retain the Wales captaincy when Wayne Pivac names the squad for the three-Test series against the Springboks on Wednesday.

According to BBC Sport, veteran lock Alun Wyn Jones will be part of the touring squad, but Biggar will continue to captain Wales as he did during the Six Nations this year.

Jones, who captained the British & Irish Lions during all three Tests against the Springboks last year, missed the first four games of the Six Nations due to injury, but made his return and won his 150th Test cap in the historic final-round loss to Italy.

The 36-year-old lock has captained Wales since 2017, leading his country to Six Nations titles in 2019 and 2021, but has only played three games for the Ospreys since recovering from the shoulder injury he suffered against New Zealand last October.

As an extra boost, Lions back George North is set to be named in the squad, having played two games for the Ospreys after recently making his comeback from an injury that kept him on the sidelines for a year.

Wales will, however, be without all of Justin Tipuric, Ken Owens, Willis Halaholo, Aaron Wainwright and Leigh Halfpenny. Other injury concerns include Tomos Williams, Josh Adams, Ross Moriarty, Wyn Jones and Johnny McNicholl.

The series against the Springboks begins in Pretoria on 2 July, before moving on to Bloemfontein and finishing in Cape Town.
