Sunwolves flyhalf Garth April has extended his stay in Japan after signing a deal to join Top League side Shimizu Blue Sharks.

The Sunwolves are in negotiations to play in a domestic Super Rugby tournament with the four other Australian franchises and the Japanese team would be based in Australia if an agreement is reached. However, this is not expected to impact in any way on Sanzaar’s decision to leave the team out of future Super Rugby tournaments.

After being left without a Super Rugby contract due to fears over a shoulder injury which required surgery, April took the opportunity to join the Sunwolves for the 2020 Super Rugby season.

Forming a halfback partnership with fellow South African Rudy Paige, April starred for his new team, scoring 34 points in five games – including three tries.

The 28-year-old had previously represented the Shining Arcs in 2018 and 2019, but has now sealed a switch to the Blue Sharks. The Top League side has also recently recruited former Stormers and Bulls centre Johnny Kotze.

The 2020 Top League season was among those cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, April could still be involved in Super Rugby in future as one of the models being discussed by Super Rugby officials involves a crossover finals series with Top League teams.
