This comes after Dewald Human suffered an injury and had to be helped off the field in the semi-finals of the Dubai Sevens. The injury forced Human out of the final, where the Blitzboks beat Ireland to claim the tournament title.
With Selvyn Davids and Justin Gelduld still recovering from injuries, Human was the only fit senior sweeper in the Springbok Sevens squad.
Afrika was surprisingly called out of retirement by former head coach Neil Powell for the Sevens World Cup in Cape Town in September. The 34-year-old, South Africa’s top-points scorer, was used as an impact player in the knockout tournament, as the Blitzboks finished in seventh place.
Blitzboks head coach Sandile Ngcobo could also opt to shift centre Muller du Plessis into the key position, or give youngster Gurshwin Wehr his Sevens Series debut, after doing the same with Ricardo Duarttee and Masande Mtshali in Dubai.
