The Sale Sharks are busy negotiating to sign Faf de Klerk in a deal that could make him one of the highest paid players in the English Premiership.
According to Rapport newspaper, the scrumhalf has been offered a three-year contract, worth R21-million, with talks between Sale, the player's representatives and the Lions said to have been prompted by De Klerk’s omission from the two Bok training camps.
De Klerk is contracted to the Lions until the end of the 2018 season, and will either need approval from the Johannesburg-based franchise for an early release, or Sale will have to buy out the last year of his contract.
Should the deal materialise, De Klerk will not be eligible to play for the Springboks until at least the 2019 World Cup, because of SA Rugby’s 30-cap eligibility ruling for foreign-based players in the national team. The 25-year-old has played 11 Tests since June 2016.
