Centre Ciaran Dayaram scored a last-minute try as SACS stunned Affies 13-10 on day two of the Kearsney Easter Festival.
It was only the second time in their 186-year history that SACS had faced Affies and the result was no different to the one in 1992 when Springbok legend Percy Montgomery guided the Cape side to a shock victory over their Pretorian counterparts.
Affies dominated the early stages and scored the opening try through left wing Christian Strydom. However, two penalties either side of the break from SACS flyhalf and captain Jordan Chait, son of former WP flyhalf Anton Chait, cut Affies’ advantage to a singe point as SACS worked their way back into the game.
The team from Pretoria extended their lead to four with a penalty goal in the final quarter, but Dayaram’s breakaway try in the dying moments of the match, which Chait converted, caused one of the biggest upsets on the South African schools rugby scene, as SACS maintain their 100% record over Affies.
In other results, Selborne staged a second-half comeback to narrowly beat Menlopark 28-20, Dale cruised to a 22-10 victory over Westville, hosts Kearsney suffered a second defeat, going down 26-7 to Grey College, Middelburg returned to winning ways by defeating Glenwood 22-11 and EG Jansen thrashed Framesby 31-6 in the final game.
