Springbok skipper Siya Kolisi is on track to make a welcome return to action in the coming weeks.

Kolisi sustained a knee injury towards the latter stages of the Stormers’ Vodacom Super Rugby season, ruling him out of any on-field action in the Springboks’ Rugby Championship openers against the Wallabies and All Blacks.

The loose forward has spent time in the Bok camp, though, fulfilling an important off-field role, while even serving in an unfamiliar role as a ‘water assistant’ during the Rugby Championship opener against the Wallabies last Saturday.

This week he has spent time training with Western Province, and appears to have only missed out on Currie Cup consideration for the clash against the Golden Lions on Saturday as a precaution.

However, his recovery appears well on track.

‘He trained full out and has taken contact,’ WP coach John Dobson commented on Thursday. ‘We were medically told that he couldn’t play.

‘I think if we didn’t have a bye next week he would definitely play. He’s been fully part of it and has been tremendous. He’s incredible.’

The good news is that should all go according to plan, Kolisi is expected to be available for the Boks’ final Rugby Championship battle against Argentina on 10 August.
