World Rugby has approved Japan’s revised hosting model for the 2019 World Cup.

After a full review and analysis of the roadmap set out by Japan after the loss of Tokyo's new national stadium as a host venue, World Rugby's executive committee were satisfied that the plan would meet the required criteria.

There had been recent reports that South Africa could step in as 2019 hosts if Japan failed to provide the necessary assurances.

However, World Rugby chairman Bernard Lapasset said they had been satisfied by Japan’s ‘committed response to the stadium issue’ and the work they’d undertaken to set out a new plan.

‘These are exciting, unprecedented times for Japan rugby and this revised roadmap reinforces and reflects the shared vision and mission to deliver a Rugby World Cup that will be great for Japan, great for Asia and great for rugby.’

Specifically, the new vision for the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan features:

• An exciting revised inventory of venues that has team and fan experience at heart and will showcase the very best of Japan to the world
• The Tokyo Stadium will replace the new national stadium within the inventory of 12 host venues the length and breadth of Japan
• The Tokyo Stadium will host the opening ceremony and opening match
• The iconic Yokohama Stadium will host the 2019 final
• Full government support for the successful staging of the tournament.
