SA on World Cup standby

South Africa could host the 2019 World Cup if Japan is not able to meet its obligations to do so.

According to SuperSport.com, Saru chief executive Jurie Roux held meetings with World Rugby this week to gauge South Africa’s readiness to take over the hosting of the next World Cup following a number of setbacks suffered by expected hosts Japan.

One of the chief concerns relates to whether Japan’s stadiums will be up to standard after it was recently revealed that the National Stadium would be unavailable.

World Rugby is now reportedly looking for assurances from Japan, while also sounding out Saru to determine South Africa’s suitability to step in should the need arise.
