Jantjies ready for Bok return

Elton Jantjies, who is on the cover of the latest SA Rugby magazine, will get a well deserved second shot with the Boks in June.

Barring injury, Jantjies will earn his third Test cap three years, eight months and six days after his second. The then 22-year-old made his Springbok debut as a 75th-minute substitute against the Wallabies at Loftus in 2012, and got 46 minutes of game time off the bench a week later against the All Blacks at Soccer City. But Bok coach Heyneke Meyer never picked him again, with Handré Pollard, Pat Lambie and Morné Steyn going to the 2015 World Cup.

However, with Pollard and Lambie suffering serious injuries earlier this year, and Steyn’s international career seemingly over, Jantjies has used the Super Rugby tournament to stake his claim for the Springbok No 10 jersey. And by producing world-class performances week in, week out for the Lions, he has earned the right to start against Ireland in June.

In this issue, chief rugby writer Jon Cardinelli looks at Jantjies’ golden opportunity to make the flyhalf position his own.
