The Vodacom Bulls moved up to third in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship with a four-tries-to-two win against the Dragons in Newport on Friday night.
Arriving at Rodney Parade after back-to-back URC derby defeats, the Bulls made an explosive start to take a 17-0 lead, but the Dragons dragged it back to a deficit of only three points before the visitors emphasised their superiority in the final quarter for a 29-14 victory.
Kurt-Lee Arendse, Harold Vorster and Bismarck du Plessis scored the visitors’ tries, while there was also a penalty try, two Johan Goosen conversions and one penalty.
URC PICKS: Bulls to rumble, Stormers to stumble
Bradley Roberts and Max Clark scored tries for the Welsh side, both of which Sam Davies converted.
Powerful No 8 Elrigh Louw was at the forefront of a clinical effort from the Bulls’ pack. The opposition were shunted quickly backwards at every scrum, with Louw and his fellow back-rowers ensuring that the vaunted Dragons trio were second best at the breakdown.
It took less than four minutes for the Bulls to show their attacking skills. An aimless kick was collected by Goosen, who left two defenders trailing his wake before feeding Arendse, who held off the attentions of Rio Dyer to complete a 70m move for the best try of the game.
