Coach Robbie Fleck has revealed that the Stormers will be looking overseas at possible reinforcements to bolster their depleted midfield stocks.
The Stormers have been hit with a series of unfortunate injuries this season, and particularly in the midfield where influential players such as Juan de Jongh, Damian de Allende and Huw Jones have all been ruled out of action.
As a result, Fleck has had to turn to inexperienced youngsters such as Dan Kriel, EW Viljoen and Dan du Plessis to make the step up on the Super Rugby stage.
Although they have handled the challenge well, there are fears that there could be serious trouble should injury strike again in the midfield.
‘We’ve had a bizarre spate of injuries in the midfield. It is funny how sometimes that happens – everything happens in one position. First there was Juan, then Damian, and now Huw. We have been looking at possible outside reinforcements. We are going to have to do that,’ Fleck said at a press conference on Monday.
‘It is going to have be from overseas. There aren’t many local centres who aren’t playing Super Rugby already,’ he added.
The Stormers are set to come up against the Cheetahs in Cape Town this Saturday, with the Free State side sweating over injury worries to Francois Venter and Sergeal Petersen.
