Readers had their say and overwhelmingly snubbed Springbok boss Jacques Nienaber as their standout South African coach of 2022.
In a poll run after the SA Rugby Coach of the Year nominees were announced on Wednesday – one of them being Nienaber – only 5 percent of fans think Rassie Erasmus’ right-hand man deserves to be crowned the best coach in the Republic.
Nienaber’s Boks finished this year with eight wins in 13 Tests for a win percentage of 62%, during a season in which the world champions surrendered their first home loss against Wales, finished second in the Rugby Championship and lost to top-ranked Ireland and France on the November tour.
John Dobson, after leading the DHL Stormers to a victorious 2021-22 Vodacom United Rugby Championship campaign, is one of the frontrunners to win SA Rugby’s top award, but his 44% of the votes from those polled wasn’t enough to trump Jimmy Stonehouse (51%), who led the Pumas to a maiden Currie Cup title in June.
