Paul Roos claimed a 16-10 win against Paarl Gym in their Mutual & Federal Premier Interschools clash in Paarl, while Grey Bloem beat Affies 42-31 in Pretoria.
Despite the appalling weather and number of handling errors, the visitors had the upper hand from the kick-off. They opened up a handy 13-0 lead at the break, with a penalty from flyhalf Reinhardt Fortuin and two unconverted tries.
The hosts hit back early in the second half with a converted touchdown and a penalty from No 10 Walter Smit, reducing the deficit to three.
But the Paul Roos forwards toiled away and continually won them favourable field position. Gym eventually conceded a penalty with three minutes left and fullback Aidynn Cupido split the uprights as the team from Stellenbosch held on for their first win in Paarl since 2006.
‘We knew it was going to be tough, but I’m very proud of my boys for pulling through today. We had a loss to Grey PE three weeks ago and we had to build some character and it showed today’, said winning captain Michael Meyer.
Meanwhile, Grey Bloem continued their dominance over Affies to remain unbeaten this season.
Grey went in to this match with a 75% success record in this fixture, while Affies were looking to claim only their fifth win in 37 contests.
Grey scored six tries, with centre Neil Stannard helping himself to a hat-trick and wing Lourens Steenkamp grabbing a brace. Affies also added to the spectacle with five scores of their own.
