Eddie to face the music

Eddie Jones is set to hear his fate as England head coach this week, but reports suggest that he could be removed from his position as early as Tuesday, in an upheaval that could cost the RFU more than R20 million.

An ongoing review led by RFU chief executive Bill Sweeney is set to decide if Jones stays as coach until next year’s World Cup in France or leaves some 12 months earlier than scheduled.

Jones will meet with an RFU review panel on Monday, with Sweeney set to report his findings to the England board on Tuesday before a final decision is made.

According to the Daily Mail, the RFU want a ‘quick decision’ to be made and it remains highly likely that Jones will be sacked before the end of the week.

The move, however, would end up costing the RFU a fair amount. Paying off the remainder of Jones’ contract will reportedly cost £700,000.

There is also the matter of potentially recruiting not only Steve Borthwick from Leicester Tigers, but also his current backroom staff to join him in the national setup. All in all, depending on how many of Jones’ assistants are retained, the costs could total over one million pounds.
