A sin bin power play is part of the innovative laws that are reportedly set to be trailed by England’s RFU in a Premiership and Championship hybrid competition next year.
According to the Telegraph, RFU director of performance Conor O’Shea has presented a number of law reforms that could be used in the new cup competition.
One of the trials is a sin bin power play, which allows each captain can nominate an opposition player to spend 10 minutes in the bin once a game.
South Africa’s Varsity Cup trialed a similar law in 2017, where any two nominated backline players could be removed from the opposition for a period of three minutes of playing time.
Equally similar to the Varsity Cup, the RFU’s reforms for the new competition include incentivising tries scored from outside the opposition 22 and reducing the number of kicks in a game.
