Jordan Hendrikse scored 21 points as the Lions held out against a late Dragons comeback to secure their first home win of the 2022-23 Vodacom United Rugby Championship season on Sunday afternoon.
Despite a disjointed and error-filled performance in wet conditions in Johannesburg, the Lions built enough of a buffer in the first half to come away with a 33-25 win.
The hosts led 19-6 at the break, thanks mainly to three penalties, a drop goal and a conversion from Jordan Hendrikse in what was a timely return to form for the flyhalf.
Hendrikse added a self-converted try in the second half, before Dragons launched a comeback attempt, crossing the tryline twice in the final 15 minutes.
The Lions did miss out on the four-try bonus point, but will be hoping to put together a better performance when they host Scarlets next Sunday.
Dragons, meanwhile, will travel to Gqeberha to take on the DHL Stormers next Saturday.
