Springbok chief Rassie Erasmus has showered praise on the “incredible player” that is World Rugby Player of the Year nominee, Lukhanyo Am.
Am, who was nominated for the prestigious award alongside Irishmen Josh van der Flier and Johnny Sexton, and France’s Antoine Dupont, was recognised for his achievements on the field despite missing the end of the Rugby Championship and end-of-year tour due to a knee injury.

The Sharks midfielder made his Test debut against Wales in 2017 and has formed a midfield spearhead alongside Damian De Allende, contributing greatly towards the 2019 World Cup triumph.
His performance in 2022 has been exceptional. Even in disappointing losses to New Zealand at Ellis Park and Australia in Adelaide, Am provided the Bok backline with a game-changing playmaker on attack and defence.
“He’s just an incredible player,” Erasmus said in Genoa on Tuesday.
“The first time that coach Jacques and I saw him was at Border club trials and he stood out.

“He just stood out, I think he was playing with a pair of tekkies. I don’t think he had boots on. We phoned an agent from there and told him to have a look at this guy as he won’t get any exposure.
“It’s a pity he couldn’t come and showcase that talent here, but we’re very proud of him. He had to fight hard to get into teams and structures.”
“He really is a special player.”
