Blitzbok assistant coach Philip Snyman has revealed the team’s ambitious target for the 2022-23 World Rugby Sevens Series.
A new era of Blitzbok rugby under head coach Sandile Ngcobo and his right-hand man Snyman will begin at the Hong Kong Sevens on 4 November.
The Blitzboks won the first four tournaments of last year’s series, but failed to reach the quarter-finals of both the Toulouse and LA Sevens at the end of the season to finish second behind Australia.
Their inconsistency was also apparent when they won Commonwealth Games gold in Birmingham but failed to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup in Cape Town a few weeks later.
Snyman says this is something the team has addressed.
“Our big focus and goal is to be consistent. We want to see if we can reach at least the semi-finals in all 11 tournaments [of the Sevens Series].
“Because the seasons follow each other so soon, our biggest challenge was to get the players hungry again,” he added. “I think the players are motivated again – there is a really good spirit in the camp.”
The Blitzboks have a couple of injury concerns ahead of the Hong Kong Sevens, with Muller du Plessis having already been ruled out of the 13-man squad that will be announced later this week.
“There is a concern with one or two players who are injured and will not recover in time [for Hong Kong],” said Snyman. “But these things are beyond one’s control and you have to control what you can.”
