Neil Powell was left unhappy after the Blitzboks slipped to a 13th-place finish at the Los Angeles Sevens, which allowed Australia to secure their very first Sevens Series title.
South Africa (124) were overhauled by the Aussies (126) on the overall Sevens Series table, with Fiji completing the medals in third with 122 points.
The Springbok Sevens team warmed up towards the end of the LA Sevens on Sunday, finishing the tournament with two solid wins over Spain and Japan and a 13th-place finish, but started their day two effort with a not-so-great 10-5 defeat by Wales in their opening match.
The two wins in three was not enough to have coach Neil Powell smiling at his last World Series tournament in charge of the Blitzboks.
“It was not what we expected,” Powell said afterwards.
“I was not happy with the effort of the team over the two days and we will have to address that when back in Cape Town and preparing for the Rugby World Cup Sevens in two weeks’ time.”
There was a glimmer of joy for the Blitzboks to take from the Sevens Series as prop Zain Davids was named as the only South African in the overall team of the 2022 season.
