Two tries from Siviwe ‘Shakes’ Soyizwapi helped World Sevens Series leaders South Africa beat Canada at the LA Sevens on Saturday.
After a shock pool B opening round defeat by USA, the Blitzboks bounced back with a four-tries-to-three victory, ahead of a showdown with old rivals New Zealand.
Muller du Plessis cut the defence to dot down under the posts for an easy conversion by Darren Adonis, before Soyizwapi cruised over in the corner from a quick-tap penalty to make it 12-0.
JC Pretorius was next to cross the whitewash, but only after a big blow for SA with an injured Zain Davids being helped from the field.
Josiah Morra pulled one back for the Canucks on the stroke of half time, and Brock Webster doubled their try tally within a minute after the restart to cut the deficit to five points.
But, Soyizwapi showed great pace and power to bag his second five-pointer, and fortune favoured the South Africans with a Webster try denied by the TMO.
Anton Ngongo notched another try for Canada before the hooter as the Blitzboks held on for a 22-17 win.
