Rugby Australia has confirmed that defence coach Matt Taylor has stepped down from his post, one week before the Wallabies take on the Springboks in Adelaide.
Taylor joined Dave Rennie’s coaching staff in 2020, having served as Scotland’s defence and then assistant coach between 2012 and 2019.

However, following a discussion with Rennie, they have agreed Taylor will step away as he attends to “personal matters”. Taylor made his name as an assistant with the Queensland Reds, playing a crucial role in their push to the 2011 Super Rugby title.
“While this was an extremely difficult decision, I know it’s the right one for me and my family at this point in time,” Taylor said. “I’m looking forward to spending more time with them and look forward to getting back into coaching when the time is right.”
The Wallabies are yet to confirm a replacement for Taylor, with the focus turning towards South Africa in Adelaide on August 27.
