Former All Blacks captain Richie McCaw will play a significant part in leading the team into the future after taking up a new leadership role.
According to Stuff.co.nz, the All Blacks legend has been appointed director of New Zealand Rugby Commercial GP Limited, the entity that will handle NZ Rugby’s commercial assets following the deal with private equity giants Silver Lake.
McCaw, who was initially sceptical about the deal, will serve as a representative of the NZ Rugby Players’ Association. Part of his responsibilities will be ensuring that players have a significant voice in the new company, especially after concerns that commercial activities might impede on-field performances.
There are five other initial listed directors, including NZ Rugby chief executive Mark Robinson and chairman Stewart Mitchell.
The Silver Lake deal, officially announced on 2 July, gave the US equity firm a NZ$200-million (US$134m) stake in the famed All Blacks.
Silver Lake are expected to provide expertise in areas such as broadcast, sponsorship, and digital technology innovations.
