Reports in Australia suggest that Dave Rennie is considering adding either Kurtley Beale or Bernard Foley to the injury-hit Wallabies squad for the upcoming Tests against the Springboks.
The Wallabies flew back home to Australia after suffering a 48-17 loss to Argentina in San Juan, where the Pumas ruthlessly exposed the visitors’ weakness under the high ball.
Rennie has used five fullbacks in the past six Test matches due to both injuries and a loss of form.
Tom Wright started for Australia in San Juan and endured a difficult afternoon, which has prompted Rennie to consider adding another overseas-based veteran to his backline.
According to Fox Sports Australia, Beale is expected to meet with the Wallabies’ medical staff on Tuesday, when his place in the squad will be decided.
France-based Beale, who famously helped the Wallabies beat the Springboks 41-39 in Bloemfontein in 2010, played in the 2019 World Cup, but was left out of the 2020 squad, before earning a recall against Scotland in November 2021.
His return will be facilitated by season-ending injuries to Samu Kerevi and Quade Cooper.
Japan-based flyhalf Foley is also under consideration for a recall and could play his first Test for the Wallabies since 2019 if he gets the nod.
There is only space for three overseas-based players in the Wallabies squad, with two spots already taken by Marika Koroibete and lock Rory Arnold. However, Arnold may be recalled early by his Japanese team, following the Tests against the Boks.
The Wallabies are expected to name their squad for the Tests against the Springboks in Adelaide and Sydney by Wednesday.
