Right wing Emiliano Boffelli scored 19 points as Argentina ran in seven tries to thrash Australia in San Juan on Saturday.
The Wallabies suffered their biggest defeat to Argentina as they went down 48-17 in the Rugby Championship to see their log-topping position slip away courtesy of the hosts’ superior points difference.
Early tries from wing Juan Imoff and prop Thomas Gallo set the tone and showed the intent the Pumas would carry throughout their impressive performance.
A try from Wallabies prop James Slipper, the subsequent conversion and a penalty soon after from flyhalf James O’Connor, did little to deter Argentina as tries from centre Jeronimo de la Fuente and flanker Juan Martin Gonzales secured a 26-10 half-time lead.
Outside centre Len Ikitau’s try and O’Connor’s extras would be all to show for the Wallabies in the second half as the Pumas showed no signs of slowing down.
Gallo scored his second and Boffelli dotted down for his own as the goal-kicking wing kept the scoreboard ticking to extend the lead to 42-17.
An overtime try from replacement flyhalf Tomas Albornoz dished up the cake that was iced by Boffelli’s conversion, taking his tally to 19 for the evening, and wrapping up a table-topping performance for Argentina.
