If the Springboks go back-to-back against the All Blacks, they will climb above France into second place.
However, after falling to their lowest ever fifth place on the rankings, New Zealand will climb back above England if they avoid defeat in South Africa.
KEO: Super Springboks must bury All Blacks at Ellis Park
The All Blacks could also overtake the Springboks into third, if they win by more than 15 points at Ellis Park.
Despite their recent struggles, the good news for New Zealand is that they cannot fall any lower than fifth even with an emphatic defeat as Australia cannot gain enough ranking points in victory against Argentina to leapfrog them.
The only permutation from the later Rugby Championship match on Saturday is that Australia will drop below Scotland if beaten by more than 15 points to equal their lowest ever ranking of seventh.
