After unleashing a monster kick to boot Werner Greeff into touch, Frans Steyn now faces the next challenger in the series to determine the most clutch Springbok goal-kicker.
Steyn won an overwhelming 94% of the vote in last week’s showdown with Greeff. He now faces Jannie de Beer, who was transformed from backup flyhalf to national hero when he kicked a world-record five drop goals in a 44-21 quarter-final victory for the Boks over England at the 1999 Rugby World Cup.
De Beer, promoted to start at the expense of Henry Honiball, finished with 34 points in the match and retained his spot for the semi-final clash with Australia at Twickenham.
The defending world champions would employ similar tactics against the Wallabies, yet this time De Beer missed four of his five drop-goal attempts in the crunch clash.
But, with Australia leading 18-15 at the death after an incredible six added minutes, the men from Down Under conceded a penalty. De Beer calmly stepped up and took the game into extra time where the Boks would, ironically, lose to a Stephen Larkham drop goal.
