Lock Scott Barrett says the All Blacks will rain on the Springboks’ parade as Malcolm Marx celebrates his 50th Test cap when the old foes clash at a “hostile” Mbombela Stadium on Saturday.

Addressing the Bok hooker’s milestone on the eve of the opening match of the 2022 Rugby Championship in Nelspruit, Barrett said: “Malcolm Marx has been an impressive player, whether he’s coming off the bench or starting a game.

“He’s big, physical and when he gets on the back of the maul close to the line he’s pretty dangerous. Hopefully we can make it a less memorable night for him on his 50th.

“We’re anticipating a pretty hostile environment; if there’s All Blacks supporters there it’ll be a bonus for us. We’re expecting a vocal, 40-odd thousand South African supporters at home – it’s what we get excited for.

“Regardless of historical results, the Freedom Cup is on the line and both teams will be gunning for a full 80 [minute] performance they can be proud of.”

Marx has been promoted to the starting XV from his customary role off the bench, but Barrett believes the Boks’ famed Bomb Squad loses none of its impact.

“We know where the Springboks are coming and it’s right at us; they’ve used [the Bomb Squad] pretty well the past two, three years… that impact,” he said.

“Our bench can bring that impact as well, but they particularly target big moments in the second half around the set piece and try to get back into the game – or close out the game – using those strengths of their game.

“Our bench is aware of that, and our starters as well, that we have to start well and keep it right on them.”
