On 29 May 2010, the Vodacom Bulls secured a third Super 14 title in four seasons with a thrilling victory over the Stormers at Orlando Stadium.
The Stormers punctured the Bulls’ aggressive defence twice for tries, by former Loftus son Bryan Habana and Springbok scrumhalf Ricky Januarie.
But the Capetonians couldn’t pull clear as Morne Steyn slotted six penalties and converted Francois Hougaard’s superb first-half try for a personal haul of 20 points.
The Bulls’ big-game experience told over the final 80 minutes of Super 14 rugby, before expansion to 15 teams in 2011, and the Stormers, despite boasting the stingiest defence in the tournament, failed to prevent Frans Ludeke’s men from triumphing 25-17 to join the Blues and Crusaders in winning back-to-back Super Rugby titles.
The on-field action in Soweto was soundtracked by the roar of the crowd’s vuvuzelas, which would provide raucous backing for when the Fifa World Cup played out in SA in June.
