Four tries and a flawless kicking display from Curwin Bosch secured a bonus-point win for the Sharks against the Lions at wet and muddy Kings Park on Saturday evening.
Bosch nailed seven out of seven shots on goal as Sean Everitt’s men cruised to a 37-10 victory, which also moved them above the Vodacom Bulls in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship standings.
The Sharks went into the break with a firm 17-3 lead, and extended that after the restart via a long-range penalty from Bosch. Bongi Mbonambi then powered over the whitewash from a textbook driving maul, and the conversion from Bosch was good.
Sikhumbuzo Notshe secured the bonus-point try, the substitute loose forward coming off the back of another maul to go around the corner and, again, Bosch nailed his shot at poles.
Rookie centre Henco van Wyk pulled one back for the Lions – his first in the URC – but the Sharks did well to quell most signs of an attacking formation by the visitors.
The Sharks drew first blood after Jaden Hendrikse tossed a pass into space and Gerbrandt Grobler burst on to it for the opening try, with Bosch adding the extras. Meanwhile, Jannie du Plessis saw yellow for a glaring off-the-ball tackle on Reniel Hugo.
The hosts soon doubled their lead, Hendrikse once more instrumental in the buildup as he dinked one over the top for Marius Louw, whose pop-up pass found Phepsi Buthelezi hurtling towards the tryline.
Jordan Hendrikse slotted over a penalty to finally open the Lions’ account, only for the flyhalf to then give away a penalty outside his 22, with Bosch making no mistake in front of the uprights.

Jaden Hendrikse a special talent. Two great touches – a pass and then a kick – have resulted in two tries #SHAvLIO

Look at this tackle from Jannie du Plessis, so stupid and blatant. #URC #SHAvLIO pic.twitter.com/zdXB28ZR1k

The older they get, the angrier the du Plessis boeties get. Maybe they should go sit on the stoep, like Blokkies Joubert ‘in the slanting winter sun’. You were heroes, don’t end as zeroes ##SHAvLIO
