The Vodacom Bulls will be wary of Kimberley’s “giant-killers” when they square up against Griquas in a Currie Cup clash on Saturday afternoon.
Bulls head coach Gert Smal was set to announce the match-day squad on Friday that will travel to the Northern Cape with the mission of bouncing back from their defeat to the Cheetahs last month.
Assistant coach and former Bulls hooker, Edgar Marutlulle, has in his playing career faced Griquas on a few occasions, and is aware of the dangers of a perilous trip to Kimberley.
“Griquas are always a giant-killer side in this competition,” he said ahead of the clash. “They are well-known for causing upsets. So that is why our preparations this week have been on point – we have not wasted a minute being complacent in any way. We’ve taken them as an opposition and given them a proper preparation for the game.”
A month of being out of action in a competition can be a long time, but the Bulls have kept themselves busy since their fixture against the Cheetahs on 2 February. The side played in a warm-up match against the Leopards, while some of the squad members were on the Vodacom United Rugby Championship tour to Italy.
“Those guys provided some good competition in the URC together with the guys who were in the Leopards game. We are on par in our preparations and we expect a good performance on the weekend.”
The match kicks off at 2.30pm on Saturday.
