England head coach Eddie Jones has sent a warning to his Six Nations title rivals as the tournament enters its endgame with two rounds left to play.
Victory over Wales this past Saturday helped England keep up their hopes of reclaiming the title they won in 2020, although tougher Tests await in Ireland and France.
England are currently third on the table, just one point behind Ireland and four behind unbeaten France, who stayed on track for a Grand Slam by comfortably putting away Scotland in Edinburgh.
Ireland, who bounced back from a loss to France by thrashing a 13-man Italy, are next up for England at Twickenham after a bye weekend.
It’s a game Jones described as a semi-final, but he is confident they can still win the Six Nations this year.
“There are three teams that can win it now and we are one of those three teams, so we’ve got a lot more belief than the three teams that can’t win it,” Jones told the Guardian.
“We’re in a good position. We’re in charge of our own destiny. We’ve just got to keep playing better, keep improving every game. We don’t fear anyone. We don’t care what other people think. All we care about is what we think and we know we’re a good young squad and a team that’s developing.
“All in all we’re in a really good position and we’re looking forward to playing a semi-final against Ireland. We’ve started off the Six Nations with a narrow loss to Scotland, we were probably the most dominant team, an emphatic win against Italy and a good tough win against the Six Nations champions. So, we’re definitely going in the right direction.”
Injury concerns for England include Manu Tuilagi, who withdrew from the starting lineup against Wales due to a hamstring strain, hooker Luke Cowan-Dickie and flank Tom Curry.
“I am not even thinking about it at the moment,” Jones said. “Injuries have their own life. We will just wait and see. When we pick the squad for [a training camp in] Bristol, [Tuilagi’s] obviously not going to be available for that. Then I will pick a new squad for Ireland and I will see whether he is available or not. If he is available and he’s fit we will pick him and if he’s not then we will move on.”
