Rory Duncan has been confirmed as the new head coach of the Cheetahs, with Franco Smith promoted to a director of rugby role.
As reported by SARugbymag.co.za earlier in the week, the coaching restructure is due to the various changes that are under way, with the Cheetahs in line to join a European tournament – widely believed to be the Pro12.
Free State Rugby announced on Friday that Duncan, who was set to take over as head coach of the Currie Cup team this year, would now also replace Smith at the helm of the Cheetahs' side set to play in Europe.
Smith will occupy a role as director of rugby, with his prime focus said to be on the development of junior coaches and players. This new role will also allow him to continue his involvement with the Springboks as an assistant coach.
Harold Verster, managing director of the Free State Cheetahs, said 'the collaboration between the two [Smith and Duncan] is impressive and very positive'.
