McKenzie magic inspired Chiefs

Damian McKenzie made some telling contributions on attack and with the boot at Newlands on Saturday, according to SARugbymag.co.za’s Opta-powered stats.

The Chiefs scored eight tries in their 60-21 hammering of the Stormers. While they racked up some impressive attacking numbers, the win was built on their accurate kicking game.

They had just 41% of the possession, but won 67% of the territory. Overall, the Chiefs produced 28 kicks in play (three more than the Stormers).

McKenzie scored 25 of the Chiefs’ points. The fullback made a crucial contribution from the kicking tee, goalling nine of his 10 attempts. He also scored a try in the 46th minute.

More could be read, however, into some of his other stats. McKenzie was prominent in the buildup to several of the Chiefs’ tries, his quick hands allowing the visiting team to beat the Stormers defence.

McKenzie made 14 passes and five kicks from hand. He made 60m, one clean break, and beat two defenders.
