The Blitzboks scored a try after the full-time hooter to claim a thrilling victory over Argentina in the Malaga Sevens cup final on Sunday.
Selvyn Davids was the hero for South Africa, scoring the late try in a 24-17 victory as the Blitzboks came back from trailing 17-12 in the second half.
Argentina were well worth their lead, excellent in disrupting the Blitzboks’ flow and momentum with aggressive and accurate defence.
The South Americans took an early lead in the first half through Rodrigo Isco’s try, but will be disappointed that they did not make more of their opportunities during this period.
On the brink of half-time, the Blitzboks won a penalty in Argentina’s half and Davids quick-tapped, sprinting through to score under the poles, with Branco du Preez’s conversion giving South Africa a 7-5 lead at the break.
It took just a minute for the Blitzboks to extend their lead in the second half as Zain Davids won a turnover and Impi Visser floated a pass wide to JC Pretorius, who had too much gas for the cover defence.
However, Argentina would not be deterred and after a strong run from Gonzales, Joaquin de la Vega powered through to level the scores at 12-12. Secconds later, De la Vega went over again as he pounced on a Blitzboks error from the kickoff to put Argentina in front.
Another bit of magic from Selvyn Davids brought the Blitzboks back into the match, as he kicked the ball through and it was regathered and sent wide to put Justin Geduld over and make it 17-17 in the final minute.
Ultimately, it was the player of the match who had the final say as Selvyn Davids ran an accurate line onto Geduld’s pass and narrowly won the race to the tryline for the winning score.
